THE CUT FRAME
I am Suhaila. I live in Simei and write about the stories that stop mid-sentence — the auntie who never finished the anecdote, the letter missing its last sheet, the photograph cropped before you saw who stood at the edge.
This is not a magazine and not a brand. It is one person keeping a written record of ordinary evenings in Singapore — the kind where nothing dramatic happens except that someone stops talking, or a tape runs out, or you realise the important part of the picture was always just outside what you were shown. I notice when an aunty at the kopitiam loses the thread of a story. I notice when a bus interchange goes quiet because the schoolgirls have moved on. I write those moments down because they are easy to forget and hard to describe unless you slow down enough to catch them.
If you have arrived here without knowing me, start with the main article below — it is the most recent and the most difficult thing I have published. After that, the journal holds five shorter pieces from the months before, each about a different corner of Simei, Tampines and the blocks I walk through on the way home from work.

The Part of the Evening Nobody Finished Telling
I had stayed late at a friend's flat further up Chin Swee Road and was walking downhill when conversations near the bus stop stopped at the same moment — then sirens. I saw nothing. I still have no ending for that evening.

About Suhaila
I work in publishing support near Tampines and come home to Simei most evenings. I am more interested in the part of the story that got cut than in the part that made it to print.
